Simon & Halbig Dolls

Simon & Halbig began making dolls in the 1869 and production soon became prolific. They made many china and bisque dolls themselves and also supplied dolls’ heads, often with fine wigs, to the French Jumeau factory and Kammer & Reinhardt. Kammer & Reinhardt bought Simon & Halbig in 1920. Simon & Halbig dolls are fully marked. The ampersand was added to the mark in 1905 and it is generally accepted that dolls marked without the ampersand were made before that date.

Simon & Halbig Dolls

Simon & Halbig (S & H) were known for there fine bisque doll heads and innovation in the doll industry, thus, they also supplied doll heads to many other well known doll manufacturers, that then attached to their own made body. These beautiful, high quality dolls heads are a close second choice to the heads made by the J.D. Kestner company, also of Germany. Such well-known names in the German and French doll industry as Kammer & Reinhardt, C.M. Bergmann, Heinrich Handwerck, Jumeau and Roullet & Decamps purchased doll heads from Simon & Halbig and attached them to their own bodies.

Kid-bodied shoulder heads (dolls with head, neck, and shoulders moulded in one piece) from the 1880s closely followed the French. Sleep (open and close) paperweight, flirty or intaglio blue-painted eyes are the main characteristics of the dolls.
